Future plans.
I am studying a Batchelor in Communications and Media: Journalism part-time at present, so it
may take me 5 years to finish my degree. My degree will help me achieve my goal of having a career
communicating with people. I plan to do electives in international relations and philosophy as I've
always been interested in thought provoking questions and the relationships between people and
Countries.
Values
Our personal values guide our lives, but our professional values should drive our career decision-making. By defining and acting on these values, we can be more deliberate in planning our professional paths.
The next steps:
I am in the process of writing a blog for Danielle Cleary events ‘Canberra Fair’. It is an exciting opportunity, and I will gain valuable written and digital experience. Eventually, I’d really like to write for a fashion label that has an online blog, preferably working with a sustainable Australian brand, like Outland denim.
I have recently been on CMS Multicultural Radio Youth-week takeover, where I had the opportunity to speak about the effect of social media on our generation. I enjoyed this experience, and will look for opportunities to get more experience on radio by volunteering for community news.
Next year I plan to travel overseas to Europe and keep a journal of everything I experience, and what I
learn from other people; eventually turning it into a blog post. This will give me experience in
creating a travel blog, and further my digital media skills. It will also indulge my passion for
experiencing different cultures, and the ways different people express themselves. The Spir-Warf Hypothesis, also known as the linguistic relativity hypothesis, refers to the proposal that the particular language one speaks influences the way one thinks about reality. I find this incredibly interesting and hope to travel the world investigating the differences between our thought process, language and cultures.
After I graduate, I would like to work as a journalist. Over the course of my Journalism degree, I want to try multiple paths that I find interesting. The experiences I gain from university, and my
personal experiences with radio, travelling and fashion blogs will help me decide which area of
journalism I’d like to go into.
A list of (and links to) the key contributors/influencers in your field who you now follow on social media, as well as the industry magazines, websites or blogs you have subscribed to.
Maria Ressa
Maria Ressa is a journalist with admirable values and ambition, she is an activist and makes societal changes through her writing. She is the co-founder and CEO of Rappler online news site. In October 2021, Maria Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for safeguarding freedom of expression in their homelands. Maria was arrested at one point, before receiving her Nobel peace prize, for doing an expose Rodrigo Duterte and the Philippine drug war. She is an exceptional person, and someone I will continue to follow and admire.
George Monbiot
George Monbiot is someone I aspire to be like. Through his persistence and perseverance George created a space for himself in the industry. He introduced investigative and environmental programs to the BBC. Over his career he has done incredible things, published multiple books, and hosted Ted talks. In 2021, George presented the world’s first live investigative documentary, Rivercide, that was directed by Franny Armstrong. This year in May George’s book Regenesis: feeding the world without devouring the planet will be released. He has already achieved great things in his career - educating the world, I can't wait to see what he does next.
